PHOENIX, December 6, 2001 -- America West Airlines (NYSE: AWA - news) announced today that more than 2.6 million passengers have flown the airline since Oct. 10, resulting in a charitable windfall for four national nonprofit organizations. As part of the company's campaign to encourage Americans to fly, America West had promised to donate 20 million FlightFund miles to its Miles of Hope program if 2.5 million passengers flew the airline between Oct. 10 and the end of the year.
"Once again, the flying public has demonstrated its support of America West by choosing our airline and contributing to an important charitable effort," said Ann Vry, director of community relations. "We are extremely proud of our customers for swiftly exceeding our goal, giving America West the go-ahead to donate an unprecedented 20 million FlightFund miles to four worthy organizations."
Miles of Hope was developed by America West to enable FlightFund members to donate their accrued miles to charity. Beneficiaries of Miles of Hope include the American Red Cross, the Make-a-Wish Foundation, Angel Flight and National Runaway Switchboard. Donated miles are used by these organizations to fulfill their missions of assisting with relief efforts, fulfilling wishes for terminally ill children, providing medical air transportation for financially needy patients, and facilitating family reunification to youths in crisis, respectively. The 20 million additional FlightFund miles donated by America West will provide 1,000 trips for Miles of Hope charities.
