ARLINGTON, Va., February 5, 2002 -- US Airways and its Dividend Miles members have set a new giving record by donating more than 75 million miles to three charities in 2001 -- Make-A-Wish Foundation, Save the Children Federation and following the horrific events of September 11, the Salvation Army emergency relief fund.
Through the thoughtful generosity of our customers, we are helping to make a difference in the lives of many people in need, said Stephen M. Usery, US Airways vice president of marketing. The number of miles being donated to these charities is growing at a rapid pace and we are extremely grateful for this outpouring of support.
Following the events of September 11, in conjunction with The Salvation Army, US Airways donated 5 million miles to the relief fund to provide travel for immediate family members of the victims of the disaster. Since then, US Airways Dividend Miles members have donated 42 million miles to the fund. US Airways will continue to take donations until March 31, 2002.
For the Make-A-Wish Foundation and the Save the Children Federation, US Airways, in an ongoing program, donates one additional mile for every five miles donated by a Dividend Miles member.
The Make-A-Wish Foundation uses donated miles to help make dreams come true for children facing life-threatening illnesses.
The Save the Children Federation uses the miles for its Web of Support program, which assists organizations that provide safe places, caring adults and constructive activities for children during out-of-school hours in more than 100 urban and rural communities nationwide.
Members can donate as many miles as they wish, starting at a minimum of 5,000 miles. Donations over 5,000 miles may be made in 1,000-mile increments. Donated miles are redeemed by the Make-A-Wish Foundation and the Save the Children Federation to further their missions for children.
Dividend Miles members can make their donations to the Dividend Miles Charity Program online at usairways.com, or by calling 1-336-661-8390. Each member also may submit a donation by faxing name, Dividend Miles account number and the number of miles to be donated to 1-336-661-8216. The donated miles automatically will be deducted from the member's account and acknowledged on the member's next account statement.
