InterContinental Hotels Group raised close to $1.8 million through its “Designs of Hope” multi-city fashion-themed event series, which were held at InterContinental Hotels in Atlanta, Chicago and Houston. The events featured artists, musicians and unique entertainment, including “bubbleologist” Geoffrey “Merlin” Akins, who entertained the Chicago attendees by creating intricate sculptures of caterpillars, cubes and even a mist-filled volcano out of soap bubbles.
The money raised was donated to UNICEF programs that provide care and support for orphans and children affected by HIV and AIDS. UNICEF notes that currently, 15.2 million children under the age of 18 have lost a mother, father or both parents to AIDS and the organization seeks to stop infections among young people and supports programs that assist orphans. Vicki Gordon, InterContinental Hotel Group senior vice president of Corporate Affairs, said “We believe strongly in UNICEF’s mission and are incredibly proud of what IHG was able to help accomplish through Designs of Hope over the past five years. Now that we’ve reached the successful conclusion of the Designs of Hope event series, we plan to look for innovative new ways to support the work of UNICEF.”
