MINNEAPOLIS, January 21, 2002 -- Northwest Airlines (Nasdaq: NWAC - news) today announced overwhelmingly positive results for the first month of its special holiday AirCares Partner donation program in which nearly 2.8 million Northwest WorldPerks Bonus Miles were generated for the carrier's AirCares charity program partners.
The special program, which began on December 1, 2001, earns each registered traveler an additional 500 bonus miles for each qualifying flight segment in addition to the base miles earned. Of the 500 bonus miles, 450 miles will be donated to the AirCares partner of the donor's choice and 50 miles are automatically credited to the traveler's account.
"We are extremely pleased with the results of the first month of this promotion," said Beth Shultis, Northwest Airlines vice president Marketing Programs and Advertising. "Our customers have consistently been generous in their support of our AirCares charity partners and I fully expect we'll see a significant increase in donations before the promotion ends in April."
Charities receiving the top five mileage amounts include Make-A-Wish Foundation, American Cancer Society, Habitat for Humanity, Guide Dogs of America and the Children's Cancer Research Fund.
Making a donation is easy with full promotion and registration details found on Northwest's Web site at http://www.nwa.com . The promotion is open to U.S. residents only. Customers must be an Northwest Airlines WorldPerks member who registers for the special promotion prior to their travel and all travel must be completed by April 30, 2002.
Northwest's AirCares program was founded in 1992 as a way to help organizations that reflect Northwest's corporate values and community concerns. Northwest selects a non-profit organization each quarter for an on- board public awareness and fundraising campaign including in-flight videos, featured articles in its WorldTraveler in-flight magazine and flight attendant announcements.
